The Diary of a Connected Car with Intel In-Vehicle Solutions

Updated, April 2017/ On March 13, Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich announced the $15 billion acquisition of Mobileye, a leader in the fast-growing market for assisted driving systems.

This is the second-largest deal in Intel’s 49-year history: “We expect to be the global leader in autonomous driving,” Mr. Krzanich said.

Mobileye was founded back in 1999. The company has pioneered a computer-vision system that can “see” cars, pedestrians and other objects on the road, then help vehicles avoid them. Mobileye’s chips and cameras are installed in 15m vehicles already, in partnership with 25 automakers.

With this acquisition, Intel is looking for offer car manufacturers a one-stop shop for autonomous-driving technology. Together with Mobileye, they will be able to offer an end-to-end solution for autonomous driving.

We live in a digital age, an age of new mobility. The connected car seems to be the obvious answer when it comes to expanding our digital lives.

A smart car can make our lives more convenient and our roads safer. And it all comes down to one thing: Connectivity.

Today’s consumers want to have access to the same functionality features they get from using their smartphones and tablets. As a result, automakers spend a big part of their budgets on infotainment and in-car technology.

The future of driving is powered by technology. A connected car ultimately means mobilizing a person’s life for them. In this context, there is a constant demand for technology to make our cars safer, smarter and more intuitive towards our needs. This means a car that has it all: Safety capabilities, automatic driver assistance, an entertainment system and informational features, to name a few. Integrating that many features is an enormous task for automakers and their suppliers.

In order to take on all the new functions mentioned above, the connected car has to “exist” in multiple networks. That’s why both automakers and tech giants are constantly on a quest to discover new and better ways to integrate connectivity into car design.

Intel’s In-Vehicle Solutions: An Overview

Leading PC chipmaker Intel Corporation is one of the companies working closely with car manufacturers to develop advanced driving technologies that enhance safety behind the wheel and the overall driving experience. The tech giant has been involved in the auto industry for many years, working with automakers to cultivate new capabilities and technology.

Back in 2014, Intel launched a set of hardware and software products called Intel® In-Vehicle Solutionaimed at vehicle automation. They are designed to help automakers reduce costs, speed things up and drastically reduce time to market.

Several car manufacturers, including Hyundai, BMW, Infiniti and Kia, use Intel’s technology to power in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems and advanced driver assistance abilities. Intel In-Vehicle Solutions were designed to support a wide range of IVI use cases, including entertainment, user interface technologies, navigation and GPS, Internet and Cloud Connectivity, accident avoidance and advanced driver assistance.

What’s Next for the Connected Car?

The world we live in today is a result of many innovations meant to push the boundaries of technology. Connected vehicles are one of the technological devices that registered the fastest growth in the past years. And it has no intention of slowing down. In the future, the connected car will be able to assume control and to safely drive itself, as car manufacturers and tech giants are coming up with new and better ways to make this possible.

But as cars become more intelligent and more aware of their environments, customers will be even more demanding. Car makers and their supplier will have to come up with creative and cost-efficient ways to deliver the in-vehicle experiences their consumers desire.
