Major Manufacturer Bosch Enters the Smart Car Industry

Robert Bosch GmbH, or Bosch, is a German engineering and electronics company. Many of you might know Bosch as a distributor of household appliances, power tools and other industrial and building products, but the reality is that the German manufacturer made history in the smart car industry by using its technology for futuristic systems and ending up as one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive components measured by 2011 revenues.

The company was founded by Robert Bosch in Stuttgart in 1886 and includes in its core products brakes, controls, electrical drives, fuel systems, generators and steering systems. All this technology is putting Bosch ahead of other distributors when it comes to sensors and expertise.

This is what Bosch asked itself lately and now they announced that they are ready to begin designs on battery technology.

This year, at the Frankfurt AutoShow, the No. 1 supplier of automotive components gave a clear indication that the next generation of connected cars are going to be safer and, if they’re battery-powered, cheaper and capable of going further on a single charge.

“Bosch is using its knowledge and considerable financial resources to achieve a breakthrough for electromobility,” said Bosch chairman Dr. Volkmar Denner. The breakthrough in question is a new solid-state lithium battery technology that can easily double the energy density at half the price. The optimistic estimation of such a battery reaching the market is under five years.

Doubling the density of the battery would double a plug-in electric car’s range between recharges and, according to Bosch’s figures, the technology will arrive when at least 33% of the European smart car industry will run on a hybrid powertrain.

“The pure lithium anode represents a huge innovative leap in battery cell construction. Solid-state cells could be a breakthrough technology” said Denner.

To sum it all up, even if we didn’t require them to prove something anymore, Bosch keeps surprising us with more and more features. It is safe to say that the future will be even more promising.
